New Casino Coming To Pennsylvania

A new mini-casino could be coming to the small town of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, which is about halfway between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

Greenwood Gaming and Entertainment, parent company of Parx Casino and Racing in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, has filed papers with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board for a license to operate the property in Cumberland County.

The initial plans for the mini-casino include 475 slot machines and tables games, as well as at least one sports bar and restaurant. The state passed a law in 2017 authorizing up to 10 of the smaller gambling facilities, which are permitted to have between 300 and 750 slot machines, and up to 30 table games.

Shippensburg represents the third choice for Parx, which previously attempted to build in Carlisle and South Middleton. To date, five of the ten locations have been chosen, including two by Penn National Gaming in York and Berks County.

Parx expects the new casino to generate $45 million in annual gross gaming revenue, as well as create at least 100 full-time jobs.

Pennsylvania casinos reported gambling win of $3.22 billion in 2017, virtually flat (0.4 percent gain) over 2016. Nationwide gaming win grew 3.4 percent in 2017.
